For all you people who are not so crazy about reading, you are in luck with this book!
Grit to Great is an easy read, but still packs a powerful message.
The basic premise is that what makes people stand out and do more, is based on the amount of “grit” they have. This book is filled with lots of short, inspirational stories about people who were determined to succeed at their life goal. Some achieved it at a young age, while others reached their dream at over 90 years old.
There’s a lot of social pressure to be “successful” at a certain age, gain a certain amount of popularity, and only certain “glamorous” goals even count– but this book isn’t about that. Success is different for each person, and it doesn’t matter if you’re 21, 54, or 92, there is SO much you can still do with your life.
As an individual…
It made me want to buckle down and face the current challenges in my life head-on. It made me rethink giving up too quickly on ideas (something I have done several times in the past year.)
As a parent…
It inspired me to look for ways to let my kids work through things that are difficult for them, rather than helping them at every turn, so they can develop their own grit. Making it in this world is a tough proposition. Things have shifted in America, and there is a lot of chaos and hurt out there. Grit is a characteristic that helps a person carry on when the going gets tough.

As an American…
It made me see that grit is a missing factor in many people of my generation, and the younger generations. The older generations had a lot of grit. They didn’t live life with a chip on their shoulder. They worked hard to become “successful.” They didn’t expect things to be handed to them, or everyone to agree with their viewpoint. There’s a lot more I could say about this, but I think we can all look at the way our grandparents lived their lives, and look at what is happening now, and see the deterioration of our world.
In conclusion
If you’ve seen the buzzword “grit” flying around a lot in recent articles and publications, you should read this book and see what it’s all about. It is worthwhile to develop some grit in your own life.
