Over on Instagram I shared videos demonstrating how I use the following resources with my 2-year old.
This post is a summary of that, so make sure you go check out my highlight bubble titled “2YO School” over on Instagram if you want to see some of this in action. You can also feel free to leave any questions you have in the comments here!

Here’s a quick overall picture of the resources. Each child has their own learning journey, but these are all resources that every one of my kids have used and enjoyed! We don’t use all of these every day. These are just the items I like to have on hand for working with my 2-year old. Caleb is the child currently learning with these, and he is one exciting personality to work with! Being my most loud and active 2-year old yet, he wasn’t ready for the tracing book, map, or math cubes/bears until more recently. He is currently two years and 7 months old. That is simply to explain that some children will enjoy this ALL right as they turn two years old, and others might need to wait a few more months. Don’t ever stress it! Wait until your little one is ready and shows interest.
You will find that most of these resources can be used again for Preschool, Kindergarten, and even 1st grade! Things like math cubes, counting bears, laminated map of the U.S., and Scripture Memory Book can be used for several grades. In other words, they are worth investing in. 🙂
Click here: “A is for Apple” lift-the-flap board book
The only approved lift-the-flap book in our house (and yes, several flaps are taped back in)! This book is worth it, even if like me, you avoid lift-the-flap books at all cost. It has a grooved feature for each letter if your child likes to do finger tracing, and has TWO words for each letter of the alphabet.

These minis are the perfect size for little ones and great for spreading on the floor to play games. They do not come laminated, but I highly recommend that you DO laminate them. Our set is on child #4 and still going strong!
This DVD is simply the best when it comes to helping children remember their letter sounds. Mom after mom told me about this DVD before I finally got it and tried it for my kids. And now I tell mom after mom about it! It’s just a little animated film, but teaches the sounds in a way that really sticks with kids.
Click here: Kumon Grow to Know Tracing Book
This book is also linked in other places on the blog. A favorite with all my kids!! They use it over and over again, tracing where they have already traced, so we get a TON of use out of it–but I do purchase a fresh, new copy of the book for each child. Kids will enjoy this book between the ages of 2 and 3 years old!
You can check out the other books in the Grow to Know Series here: Grow to Know Kumon . I’ll list these again when I create a post for Preschool Resources (ages 3-4)!

Click here: Math Cubes (set of 100)
For K5 and 1st grade, these are awesome for making patterns, counting by 5’s and 10’s, simple addition/subtraction/multiplication concepts, and MORE! For 2 year olds though, I like to use them for learning colors, motor skills (scooping, stacking, etc), sorting, and counting. They are so versatile!
Click here: Counting Bears (set of 96)
Maybe it was nostalgia that originally got me to purchase these counting bears, because growing up I used them in math AND to tell all kinds of made up stories–but they have been very useful for teaching colors, sorting, counting, and patterns. I like this set, because it comes with small, medium and large bears.
Click here: ABC Scripture Memory Book
Not available for purchase on Amazon, but easy to grab on the Scripture Memory Fellowship website, this flip book is formatted so well for little ones, and nice and sturdy too!
Click here: Laminated Map of the United States
You’ll notice this map is different than the one pictured at the top of the post. That’s because I grabbed a second map of the states that we got with another geography set at some point. The linked map works GREAT for teaching your kids the states because it comes already laminated and is placemat size. You can use it at the table because it’s wipeable, and you can even use dry erase markers on it if you want!
Here’s an older post that features Kenny as a 23 month old (he’s now 7 years old) identifying states on a similar map. This post also gives detailed instructions on how to teach a young child all the states. It’s easier to do than you might think!!
Click here: Birds of North America Oversized Flash Cards
This is just one example of large flash cards that you can use to teach your little one! I love teaching them to recognize various birds, bugs, flowers and other nature for several reasons. 1) It’s good general knowledge. 2) It helps them notice the world around them. They don’t just think of birds as birds. Instead they think in details. “That bird is a robin.” 3) This in turn makes it easy to point out the creativity of Our Creator and how He made the world beautiful and unique! 4) Memorization is excellent for children’s brains, no matter what they’re memorizing! I’ll be sharing more specific thoughts on how to pick the best flash cards, and ways to use them, over on my Instagram in the near future. You can follow me under the handle: @thelittleyears over there.
