“Dear Adelyn” … Letters to my daughter

By way of introduction to this new blog series…

It’s been on my heart to write out letters to my children and to write out prayers for them. This letter is to my daughter, Addie. She is the sweetest most thoughtful child I have ever met and I want to protect that love I see in her. Unforgiveness is the enemy of loving others to the fullest extent.

I’m only 29, but I’ve seen many, many relationships ruined by unforgiveness. Someone hurts us in some way, and we let it take it’s root in our heart. This is a personal letter written to my daughter, but I share it here for two reasons.

1) I hope it inspires you to write letters or talk to your children about matters like this. If we help them develop the habit of forgiving quickly when they are young, we can save them much grief in their adulthood.

2) Maybe this is a matter that you struggle with in your heart and it can bless and encourage you. I know that reading the book, “Choosing Forgiveness” by Nancy Leigh Demoss was a pivot point in my life. I realized I had unforgiveness and I hadn’t even recognized it was present in my heart.

This is written to a 7-year old, so it is presented in the simplest way–yet truth is truth so I hope and pray this reaches someone who can be blessed by it’s simple truth.

Dear Adelyn,

I often admire the care you have for others. You include everyone and think about other people’s feelings. This is a wonderful trait. I want you to nurture and grow your love for others. The Bible says…

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:34-35)

Someday, someone will intentionally leave you out of something that you’d like to be a part of. It will hurt. When this happens, even though your heart will feel a little broken, forgive them right away. Although it is not easy, especially when someone isn’t sorry for their hurtful action, forgiving is what keeps our hearts full of love toward others. The Bible says…

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

God has given you tenderheartedness toward others. To keep that gift you will have to forgive completely.

If you’re having a difficult time forgiving someone, remember that Jesus is willing to forgive you. The Bible says…

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

This means we need to forgive others too. When it’s especially hard to forgive, pray about it. Start by thanking God for forgiving you, then ask Him to help you forgive the person who did something unkind to you. The Bible says…

“Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.” (Psalm 143: 10)

I love you, sweet daughter. Keep your heart tender and loving and God will use your life to touch many!
