Are you one of those moms who doesn’t have the heart to say “Please don’t buy my kids any more toys!” to your relatives at Christmas time– but you cringe at the thought of adding anymore “stuff” to their bedroom? You’re not alone!
If you are asking, “Is there a nice way to say ‘no toys’ to the grandparents?!?” Some will tell you this is okay, and some say it’s rude. I tend to think that it could come across poorly, so what I recommend instead, is having a great list of things that the kids need, (like snowpants, or new socks.) Or if they want to give toys (most grandparents and aunties do) then you can point them toward consumable toys.
Toys that your child will love, use up, and you won’t have to store for years.
Below are my favorite (and my kids’ fave) consumable gifts for kids ages 2-5 years old.
Tape Activity Book
My mother-in-law found this book recently, and my kids have LOVED it. They are huge fans of washi tape (more on that later), so this book was perfect for them. They simply rip a piece of tape to stick along the white lines on each page. No scissors needed! There are all sorts of fun scenes, including my kids’ favorite, which is a guy with crazy hair.
Stamp Marker Activity book
Kenny got the boy version of this activity pad for his birthday from one of his aunties. He is such a typical firstborn, stamping each spot so precisely. If your child is still in the scribbling stage, this will be a little too advanced. But ages 2.5+ will enjoy the challenge of matching the marker to it’s shape.
Colorblast Pads
We have used these when we take the kids on road trips or airplanes. It’s one white marker, that reveals all the colors on each page. This pad is good even for scribblers!

Make-a-Face Sticker Pad
Be prepared for lots of giggles if your kids get this book! My kids stick the stickers in wacky places and then crack up laughing.
Sticker & Paste book
Here’s another great sticker book for ages 2+.
Washi Tape on Dispensers
So about my kids and washi tape… I don’t remember exactly when, but they started “borrowing” my washi tape from time to time, and I soon realized they needed their own or mine would be gone! Since then, it’s become one of their favorite things to receive from their Nana. I love it, because unlike stickers, which are a challenge to peel off if they accidentally get stuck somewhere that they shouldn’t, washi tape peels right off and leaves no residue! win-win with washi tape! (well, as long as they aren’t taking mine.)
You can find this set {here.}
Colorful Washi Tape
If you prefer, get the tape without dispensers. Because the tape rips off without using scissors, it’s sometimes easier for younger ones to use it straight off the roll.
Rainbow Washi Tape
There are also these solid colors available that are fun for crafts too….And for yourself you could get this set, but let’s not get distracted. 😉
So there you have it. Our favorite consumable gifts.
Let me know in the comments what else could be added to this list!

November 9, 2016 at 6:46 pmSome wonderful ideas here. I am actually quite excited that the thought of art materials/consumable gifts already crossed my mind. Normally when I read your articles you present ideas that I hadn’t thought of and I head straight to my Amazon list. 🙂 Thanks for some specific ideas today. I have never purchased or used washi tape before, but it sounds like a great tape option for children. 🙂

November 7, 2017 at 7:05 pmSeems like a rather short list of mostly melissa and doug stuff (sponsored post?) These things take a long time to consume and would just add to the clutter in my house.
